All Shook Up – A play about Diabetes

Frank is a 45 year old lorry driver by day, Elvis impersonator by night. His wife Milly is a worrier; worried that they’re getting fat, worried that she won’t get the sequins sewn on his suit in time for the finals of Karaoke Elvis and worried that Frank’s having an affair. She might love him tender, but right now, she’s all shook up!

Frank’s all shook up too, but he won’t tell anyone. He’s tired all the time, he can’t stop going to the toilet, he doesn’t think he can fit into his Elvis suit, and he’s having a little problem in the bedroom department. Eventually he goes to the doctor and to his shock, finds himself diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

That is how ‘All Shook Up’, a very funny play commissioned by the Pyramid Theatre Company, about a serious subject begins. To find out what happens to Frank, Milly and a host of other characters in the play you need to come along to one of the events detailed on the front cover.

The play lasts 45 minutes, followed by a 20 minute hot-seating session where the audience can ask the characters why they did certain things. Health Service personnel will be in attendance and will answer questions from the audience and they will be available to answer individual queries that anyone may have.

‘All Shook Up’ is fully researched and provides accurate information, but can also stand alone as a piece of theatrical entertainment. It is very effective as a training session with health care professionals, home care workers, youth and community workers, teachers, parents, a variety of students and Elvis fans!

By attending this event we hope to:
  • Raise awareness of diabetes amongst the general public and encourage testing for the condition.
  • Raise awareness of the connection between lifestyle and the onset of type-two diabetes.
  • Dispel myths and promote understanding of diabetes and the issues surrounding the condition.
  • Give information on the nature, control and treatment of diabetes.
  • Demonstrate the importance of taking early steps when problems are recognised.
  • Act as a catalyst which encourages discussion about fears and anxieties surrounding diabetes.
  • Provide information on local and national services and facilities.

NHS Western Isles, in partnership with Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Integrated Community Schools, Department of Education), have coordinated these events with the Pyramid Theatre Company, who are the only remaining ‘theatre-in-health-education’ company who tour on a UK wide basis.
