It is recommended that patients diagnosed with diabetes are seen by a Dietetian within 4 weeks of diagnosis. They should also have an annual dietetic assessment for review and update of their diet.

At the present time the Department of Nutrition & Dietetics aim to see all patients who are referred as an outpatient within 5 weeks of referral. The average waiting time is 2-3 weeks. Patients may be referred by GPs, Practice Nurses, Diabetes Specialist Nurses or Consultants.
Inpatients within the Western Isles Hospital are usually seen within 2 working days. In Uist and Barra Hospital and St Brendan's this contact maybe by telephone.

Patients can be seen by the Community Dietitian in their GP Practice in the rural areas of Lewis, Harris, Uists, Benbecula and Barra. They may also be seen in the Dietetic Outpatient Clinic within the Western Isles Hospital.
Patients are seen by the Dietitian with a special interest in diabetes at the consultant led clinics in Western Isles Hospital, Uist and Barra Hospital and St Brendan's. The Diabetes Clinics, held at certain GP clinics, are on occasion attended by this Dietitian.

An answer machine service is available on both lines.

At the present time it is not possible for all patients with diabetes to be seen for an annual review. Priority is given to newly diagnosed patients, paediatric patients and those whose diabetes is difficult to control.
This area of service will be looked at when the Diabetes Service is reviewed.
